Spousal Abuse Explained

People who are married experience a lot of ups and downs throughout the course of their relationship. This is a normal part of the married life. However, there are many situations that may occur in a marriage that is not considered appropriate, or normal. This situation is referred to as “spousal abuse”. This occurs when either the wife or the husband experiences any type of mistreatment, or any type of abuse, from their partner. People, who simply live together as a couple, whether they are opposite sex or same sex, may experience this. Spousal abuse is a situation that can occur during the course of the marriage or living arrangement, and well after the relationship ends.

Spousal abuse has been found to be a serious, yet common issue among couple in the United States. However, since most of this kind of thing stays behind closed doors, many people may not realize that spousal abuse is occurring. On most cases of spousal abuse, it is the woman that comes forth with allegations, however, it has been discovered that many men experience spousal abuse. It is not as common for a man to come forth with allegations of spousal abuse because of the fact that they are embarrassed, or feel that no one would believe it.

When a person experiences spousal abuse, they may experience it on a number of levels. The most common levels of spousal abuse include physical abuse, as well as abuse that is emotional in nature. However, a person may also experience sexual abuse, economic abuse, as well as spiritual abuse. Here, you will find a description of each type of spousal abuse that a person may experience. If you experience any of these types of spousal abuse, you should seek help from a professional.

1) Physical abuse occurs when a person uses physical force against their spouse. The physical activity may possibly harm someone, or it may end up harming someone. Some types of physical abuse by a spouse include restraining someone, hitting, and pushing. 2) Emotional abuse occurs when the spouse is yelled at frequently, makes threats in a verbal manner, and demeans. 3) Sexual abuse occurs when the spouse pushes a person to engage in unwanted sexual activities, and forces them to have sex or certain types of sex. 4) Economic abuse occurs when a spouse controls the money in such a way that a person is unable to have basic needs met, they are forced to choose a career that they do not want to pursue, and stealing from the other person in the relationship. 5) Spiritual abuse occurs when a spouse prevents a person from engaging in spiritual satisfying regimes, or demeans them for their beliefs.

As you can see, there are many levels to spousal abuse. One may suffer just one of these levels, or a combination of a few of these levels. The truly unfortunate must endure all of these levels.
